Detective John Burns Dies At Rifle Range

Detective Sergeant John J. Burns died suddenly yesterday morning (Friday, August 17, 1945) at the rifle range of the Baltimore Police Department Retraining School on Wire Mill Road, Sparrows Point. He was 43 years old.
While on the range, Sergeant Burns complained to Lieutenant Leonard Fehlauer, head of the school, about chest pains. Lieutenant Fehlauer suggested that he rest on a nearby bench. Within a few minutes, Sergeant Burns collapsed. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Sparrows Point Hospital.
Sergeant Burns was appointed to the police force on September 11, 1928, and served in the Eastern District until he was transferred to the Detective Bureau in 1933. He was promoted to sergeant in 1937 and was commended ten times. He was the son of the late Captain Charles H. Burns, who was head of the Detective Bureau for several years
