Thomas Marshal Baldwin

BALDWIN, THOMAS MARSHAL

A member of the Baltimore Police department for 3 years, on 27 July 1873 while transporting arrested Patrick Shane to the Middle District on charges of stoning a house at the corner of Front and Hillen Streets. Shane became aggressive and attacked Officer Baldwin. Officer Baldwin was so badly injured that he required some weeks of confinement to his home for recovery. He made attempts to come back to work, but was never back to full health, complaining at times during time when complaining was not common. But nonetheless he continued to try to go to work. His immune system was off due to injuries and he caught a severe cold again confining him to his home. He was attacked and then with a severe cold he ended up being confined to his home until he died on 6 Oct 1873.  His funeral took place on the morning of the 7th of Oct 1873, his body accompanied by a detachment of the police force was conveyed to Covington Station where it was send on the Baltimore and Potomac railroad back to his family home. He was survived by his wife and two children.   We learned of Officer Baldwin after reading and article written a few months later about fallen Officer William H Healy of the Eastern District killed on 27 Oct 1783 during a struggle with Thomas Dillen on Hampstead Street east of Caroline Street at the bottom of the article the reporter wrote, This is the second case within a few short months of the death of a policeman from the effects of the rough treatment received from disorderly characters they were attempting to and did arrest, the other case being that of officer Thomas Baldwin.
